Lamia (lay-mee-uh) is just an old word for "vampire," but in the Night World it has come to mean the vampires who are born that way. They are born, from other lamia, and they age like humans do - except that they are able to stop aging whenever they want. They are, however, obligated to continue to hold off the aging process for the rest of eternity, or else the years will come back to haunt them - all at once. This is particularly interesting if the lamia is older than a hundred, because there is no going back once a vampire ages. Lamia breathe and they can walk around in daylight - although sunlight limits all vampiric powers. They also can eat human food, although it provides no nutrition. Lamia, like all vampires, survive on human blood; they must feed daily, or else they will go into a blood-lust. They do not have to kill humans to eat; only a little is needed. Their eyes can be a variety of colors, but change in accordance to certain moods; when a vampire hungry, their eyes are a deep red, and when a vampire is under stress, their eyes are black.
The powers of the lamia are thought to be stronger than made-vampires - but this is mostly archaic myth. All vampires are able to see the auras and read the minds of humans as well as the other Night World inhabitants. The older and stronger vampires (called the Elders) are able to hide these, while the younger made-vampires are the most susceptible. Their senses, reflexes, minds, and bodies are far stronger than any humans.
